For some, their owners have passed away and family members drop them off at the nearest shelter like yesterday's trash. For others, they're tossed aside for a new younger model like an old beat up car. And for others, they're one of the casualties of a downward spiraling economy where families are losing their homes and their family members. Whatever the case, our seniors find themselves without a home in a forsaken land. They're the forgotten ones. They're not the cutest. They're not the spunkiest. They're not ones who will run up to you in the shelter and beg you to take them home. Rather, most of them will be huddled in the back of the cage, terrified that their life has come to this and they've been so unceremoniously abandoned.
They've been the loyalist of dogs often for 10 or more years. They've loved, they've protected, they've warmed the saddest of hearts and kissed away tears. All they ever asked was in their last days to have a soft place to rest their heads and a warm home to call their own. But they're abandoned in a place filled with thundering noise, where it's cold and damp and where compassion and love are often in short supply. What did they do to deserve this fate? They grew old.
We call them our Dinosaurs. Whatever their story is, they didn't deserve to die in a shelter alone and we couldn't let them. We took them in, we gave them a warm bed and promised them they are safe for as long as they are here on this earth. We call their sanctuary, The Bed and Biscuit. Plenty of beds and plenty of treats...
Please consider partnering with us as we take care of these ones who had no other options and don't deserve to die alone. Some will be with us for only a few months. Some will be with us for a couple years, if we are lucky. But either way, we are committed until we must say Goodbye and escort them over the Rainbow Bridge.

Brandy was a beloved pet of a wonderful woman who did rescue. We lost her to cancer and per her wishes, Brandy went to live with another great woman to spend her last days. Unfortunately, Brandy's new Mom also passed away and now at 15 she has come to us to spend her last days. She still has some spunk. She's a great reminder of two fabulous women who both passionately loved her. We were proud to step in and care for her.

New Buddy came to us via another rescue who had some problems placing him. He is 12 years old, loves to play with the other "young at heart" seniors and his best friend is LuLu. He's a sweet dog with some dispositional issues but in our setting he flourishes. And it was a great option for him where he can be loved.

Gramps was a severe neglect case when he was found wandering by animal control. He had horrific skin conditions and ear infections and glaucoma in both eyes. But now all of his medical conditions are cleared up and though he is blind, he no longer suffers pain from the glaucoma thanks to the work of our great Vet!

Old Buddy is 15 years old and the room mate of Gramps. He previously belonged to a man suffering from Alzheimers. His is indeed a sad tale because the only thing Old Buddy's owner consistently remembered was his faithful dog. Whereas the rest of his world was fading, Old Buddy was never forgotten. But due to the man's age, his doctored feared he'd one day trip and fall over Old Buddy and advised the family to remove Old Buddy from his home. He came to us. So he became friends with Gramps and they are 'partners in crime' though that usually just includes hanging out and monitoring all the latest happenings.

Granny Goose is our 14 year old Bossy Flossy. She rules the roost around the Bed and Biscuit and when the "younger" ones get out of line or too frisky, she is sure to set them straight. We're convinced everyone just feels sorry for the 'one tooth wonder' so they let her think she's Queen Bee. Granny Goose found herself in her twilight years at the shelter counting down the days. We just couldn't let this little dignified girl who still has some spark in her, die at the shelter.

Old Fart, real name Roscoe, was a favorite at the shelter with an employee who just kept him hanging out though there was really no hope he'd get adopted. She waited, pleaded, begged and finally his days were numbered. On his last day when she thought all hope was left, she called and asked if we'd take her dear "Old Fart". When they're loved that much by staff, how do we turn them down? So Old Fart spends his days chasing tennis balls and remembering a great person who went the extra mile for him...

Andee was abandoned at a high kill large Los Angeles shelter with her long time pal of 10 + years, Amos. They were an inseparable pair who had little chance on their own of getting adopted, let alone together. We were contacted and agreed to take both. Unfortunately last year, we lost Amos to cancer. We feared that we'd lose Andee as well but we gave her some new fur friends and it revived her. She's lost her vision to cataracts but she continues to thrive with her new friends who seemed to sense that she needed a little extra love.

Taffy, one of our first residents was blinded by glaucoma and is also deaf. She's adjusted to her limitations well and continues to thrive. She's probably our oldest resident, though we don't know how old, we'd guess in the 16 year range and she shows no signs of letting go, thankfully. We're all quite attached to her. In the summer she loves to sit in the kiddy pools we have for the dogs. Of course there's only 1-2 inches of water but boy, oh boy, that's more than enough for our little girl who in her younger days probably frolicked in the water!

Winnie and her daughter were brought to us when they were abandoned in someone's backyard. They were completely hairless from bacterial and skin infections. When the owners were asked, they gladly relinquished the dogs. Obviously they had not been cared for and needed a new home. How tragically sad that they were allowed to languish in this condition. It took over a year, but both have full coats and are enjoying their new life.

Lacie is a 14 year old who was left in her garage by the owners when the home went into foreclosure. Thankfully the realtor cared and now Lacie has been with us for almost a year.

Haliee is an 8-10 year old Shih Tzu who is the perfect little dog. She loves people, loves other dogs, gets along with the cats and wants nothing more then to just be around her people. Unfortunately she was dumped at the shelter as a matted mess and left to spend her last days there. Thankfully we saw her and she won us over! She's a love. We know that she could find a great home and be loved for many years to come. But if not, she has a warm bed and lots of love from all of us!
