Jake's Blankets is the story of an adoptive Mom who wanted to make a BIG difference with limited financial resources. Instead of writing a check she decided to buy some fleece, make blankets and sell them to double her donation. To her astonishment she sold the blankets very easily by telling her friends and family about what she was trying to accomplish. She donated twice the amount she originally planned to give and still was able to buy more fleece to make more blankets. She then sought out stores, boutiques, more acquaintances and began selling the blankets. She brought blankets to adoption events where they were huge hits and she sold them. Fast forward, a few months and Jake's Blankets has donated more than $3,000 and is still going strong. The Blankets are now in over 6 stores, two doggy day camps, and all the proceeds go back to Doggie Protective Services. It's a story of using one's talents and ingenuity to make a bigger difference.
Jake's Blankets have helped save the life of two other blind dogs, paid for the surgery of a dog who needed eye surgery (kind of appropriate huh?) and is helping to fund our latest special-needs rescue dog, Myer the Chow. The life of one dog, the will and desire of an adoptive mom has helped save so many other dogs and it's a legacy that will continue.
The story of Jake:
Jake is a blind Papillon long-haired Chihuahua mix. How he navigated the streets without getting hit by a car is still a mystery. He made it to the shelter in one piece, but it was a high-kill shelter and a blind dog isn't a hot commodity. The previous owners did come to the shelter to claim Jake but refused to pay the fees claiming a blind dog wasn't worth it. An Animal Control Officer felt like he deserved a home that would really appreciate him, contacted us and told us his story. We knew we could find him a home that would love and cherish him and not just see him as a blind dog. His new Mom Heidi has proven how much love, joy and life this blind dog can bring to a home. He has opened her eyes to a whole new world and a joy that is indescribable. And Jake hit the jackpot with his new life. He gets to travel all over the United States and most recently enjoyed a wine and beach excursion to the Pacific Northwest. Not too long ago he was flying high as he went to visit "Grandma" in Minnesota. And meanwhile he continues to be an ambassador for Jake's Blankets" and DPS wherever he goes
As you can see below, Jake's Blankets come in a variety of patterns and colors. Heidi and Jake do take custom orders and can get almost any fleece for your favorite sports team. Small blankets are $20 and the large ones sell for $40.
